I am a Staff Scientist in the area of Computational Bioscience and AI at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. I received my Ph.D. in 2009 from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.

My research to date has focused on the intersection of visualization, AI & machine learning (AI/ML), data standardization, and data management for large an complex scientific data, with a particular focus on (a) machine learning, visualization, and analytics algorithms and methods for large-scale, high-dimensional, and multi-modal data, (b) data modeling and management for efficient data sharing and integration, and (c) data and analysis systems to enable data sharing, reuse, and analysis. As part of my research I have the great opportunity to closely collaborate with a wide range of application sciences — including, gene expression, metabolomics, particle physics, finance, neuroscience, and climate .

I have contributed to and lead the design, implementation, and development of publicly available and well-recognized visualization and analysis applications, including, NWB, PointCloudXplore, WarpIV, HDMF, BASTet, and OpenMSI. I have received two prestigious R&D 100 Award; in 2015 for the development of OpenMSI and in 2019 for the development of NWB. I have contributed to more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in high-ranking journals and conferences and more than 200 other publications in the form of posters, technical reports, theses, and presentations .
